AUSTRALIA DAY CELEBRATION & AWARD PRESENTATION
Each year the District Council of Grant offers a different township the chance to host the Council’s Australia Day Celebration and Award Presentation. This allows the township the opportunity to hold a family friendly, and affordable celebration in their community and Council is grateful to the many volunteers who assist in making these events successful. Australian Citizenship Ceremonies are also held on the day if requested. Pets are not permitted at this event.
2017 DISTRICT COUNCIL OF GRANT AUSTRALIA DAY
About 500 people celebrated Australia Day at the Port MacDonnell Football Club on Thursday 26th January 2017 for a BBQ lunch.
The free family focused event featured live music by the Mount Gambier City Band, and a rendition of the National Anthem by Maddy Murdoch.
Vehicles from 2 local car clubs, a jumping castle, and the Port MacDonnell Lions Club merry-go-round were also features of the event. Weather conditions were near perfect.
Three people chose to undertake their Australian Citizenship Ceremony at the event, and special guest, Australia Day Ambassador Mr John (Jack) Cahill, gave a spirited address before assisting with the presentation of Australia Day Awards.
A total of 6 Australia Day Award nominations were received for 2 categories, with all nominees attending the presentation:
• 2017 Citizen of the Year – Mr Garry Talbot
• 2017 Community Event of the Year – Tarpeena Cancer Support Group
Council is very appreciative of the hard work and preparation completed by community group volunteers to ensure the success of the celebration.
